about us

What is Yoga?

Yoga is a rich ancient science, with the word Yoga coming from the Sanskrit root “Yuj”,or union. The practice of yoga can take us from the ordinary to the sacred, from the mundane to an awakened sense of self. By balancing the body, mind and spirit, yoga gives us the tools to live consciously and with awareness.

In experiencing our true self more deeply, yoga teaches us to see more clearly into the nature of our interrelationship with the world around us. This ability to know all parts of our selves with compassionate self-awareness, gives us the inner strength to face the difficulties life might bring us. In essence, Yoga is a science of self-awareness, self-realization, and self-discovery.

Most westerners identify yoga with hatha yoga, which seeks to promote health and well-being through the physical aspects of yoga. These are called “poses”, “postures” or “asanas” (Sanskrit). A sustained yoga practice can offer many benefits, not least of which is a strong, supple and healthy body.
It’s never too late or too early to begin the practice of yoga. Anyone can do it!
